Which Wich is an international restaurant franchise with over 400 outlets globally. Its primarily products are sandwiches and has the same working model as Subway. The customer walks in the restaurant, picks up a menu paper on which she can mark the type of sandwich she wants, the ingredients that she wants and the sauce dressing & extras that she’d like with that. Then she hands over that paper to the chef and based on that her sandwich is prepared. The project that we worked on was pertaining to its UAE based restaurants only. The franchise owner in UAE runs 9 Which Wich restaurants in Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Sharjah.
When the first 2 UAE franchisee restaurants opened, they couldn’t offer their customers an online ordering system which allowed them to order sandwiches online. The system that the North American branches were using wasn’t compatible to work in UAE. So, the HQ allowed them to build their own online ordering platform, which would adhere to the branding guidelines of the Which Wich brand. They couldn’t resort to any off-the-shelf SaaS based product because the online ordering portal had to have the same step-by-step, sandwich ordering process as the customer gets in their restaurants.
The other problem was that the kitchen staff was used to preparing the sandwiches based on a receipt that was printed out of the POS machine in the store. The receipt was well-formatted and it had all the details of the order to be cooked. These receipts were a major part of their operations in all restaurants. They needed the online ordering system to print out the exact same type of receipts automatically when someone placed an order online.
We visited the client’s restaurants in Dubai. After extensive interviews with the staff, and the owner, we drafted the wireframes for the system. Based on those wireframes, we created a web-based system that solved all their problems and offered a brilliant food ordering experience to their customers. The system was divided into 3-parts, a front-end system, the restaurant outlet manager panel and the super admin area.
The front-end system was for the customers to place their orders for pickup, or delivery. They could also create their accounts and store multiple delivery addresses for easy access. They could check their order status and order history as well. Once the order was placed, the system routed the order to the appropriate outlet after checking variety of parameters.
Then part-2 of the system was the restaurant outlet manager panel where the newly placed orders showed up and receipt got printed automatically in the EPSON POS printer. The manager updated the order status from that panel when the order was ready and the panel also offered other features like, working hours management, menu item availability notification, daily order summary, and staff management.

Lastly, the 3rd part of the system, the super admin area offered business dashboard from where the client could check the performance of each restaurant outlet on a daily basis. It allowed him to add a new outlet, operate the menu items for all restaurants, and run statistics studying variety of financial checks. This way, the Which Wich franchises in UAE could sell their delicious sandwiches online.
